Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God. (Romans 5:1-2 ESV)
For, being ignorant of the righteousness of God, and seeking to establish their own, they did not submit to God’s righteousness. For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to everyone who believes. (Romans 10:3-4 ESV)
Faith is a gift from God. When we trust in Jesus we are justified in the sight of God through faith and faith alone. The Old Testament law was given to show us the righteousness of God. While the Law of God is good, only Jesus was able to keep it perfectly. So all the rituals, feast, and sacrifices, in the Old Testament pointed to Jesus, who is the Lamb of God, that was predestined to be slain before the foundation of the world. This was done according to God’s foreknowledge of things to come. He knew that man would rebel when given free will. So He provided Jesus the spotless Lamb whose sacrifice would cleanse us from sin.
God sent his Son at the right time in human history to fulfill his ultimate plan of the redemption of mankind. He died to pay our sin debt. Jesus has satisfied God’s justice. And He has fulfilled all the righteous requirements of the Law. He was also raised from the dead for our justification. And the Father sent His Spirit for our ongoing sanctification, so that we have now have the power to flee from sin, and to be overcomers, in this present evil age.
Let me put it another way. The law was our guardian until Christ came; it protected us until we could be made right with God through faith. (Galatians 3:24 NLT)
“Do not think that I have come to abolish the Law or the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them. For truly, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away, not an iota, not a dot, will pass from the Law until all is accomplished.
(Matthew 5:17-18 ESV)
As a result of the death and resurrection of Jesus we have been freed from our enslavement to sin. In Christ our past, present and future sins are forgiven. He rose and conquered death so that we can live forever in the presence of God. And all who trust in Jesus as Lord, and Savior, now have peace with God.
With the coming of the Holy Spirit we have been empowered to live an overcoming life. If we don’t shrink back to our old ways of thinking (and sometimes we do), we can experience the peace and comfort of the Holy Spirit on a daily basis. The Old Testament Law is good, but no one except Jesus, has ever obeyed it perfectly. Our right standing with God is based on the fact that Jesus was the sinless, spotless, sacrificial lamb of God.
His perfect obedience paid our sin debt, and placed all who would trust Him in right standing with the Father. Jesus has fulfilled all the righteous requirements of the Law. And we are now empowered by God’s Spirit to keep the moral Law, as we walk in the Spirit. The law pointed out our sin, but the Spirit gives us the power to overcome it.
